Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Find Your Career In Ultrasound

Ultrasound plays a valuable role in medical diagnostics. Ultrasound Technologists, also called Medical Sonographers use ultrasound to generate photo or video images of soft-tissue objects inside the human body. This provides a real-life internal snapshot, aiding physicians in their diagnoses.

Ultrasound Technologists are most commonly associated with fetal imaging during pregnancy, but they can also detect a variety of other medical conditions. Besides being part of a rapidly expanding health care industry, ultrasound diagnostics are gaining popularity as a safer alternative to radiologic procedures, creating excellent job opportunities.

Ultrasound Technologist training can be completed in as little as
12 months at the Institute of Healthcare Professions (IHP).

According to the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by about 18 percent through 2018—faster than the average for all occupations. Sonographers work in a variety of settings including hospitals, imaging centers and medical offices.

IHP’s programs focus on the three most in-demand uses of Sonography:

  • Diagnostic Sonography – Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology
  • Cardiac Sonography - Echocardiography
  • Vascular Sonography
Graduates of the IHP’s ultrasound programs are eligible to take registry examinations offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and/or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
